Christmas and New Year in the Vechtdal
For most people the holidays are mainly full: diaries that will not fit, tables that are too small, and a day that ends before it felt like it began. We see the same thing every year: the guests who stay with us between Christmas and New Year come precisely to avoid that.
Cooking is the celebration
At our place most of it happens in the kitchen. The kitchen island seats four, the kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a fridge-freezer that can handle a Christmas shopping list. In December that is more useful than it sounds: you do not cook here in passing, you make an afternoon of it.
The Weber gas barbecue sits under the 50 m² covered outdoor room. Winter barbecuing is less odd than it sounds when you are sheltered and the wood stove is burning beside you.
The forest in winter
A winter forest is empty and loud at the same time: no people, but cracking wood and birds. The paths are the same as in summer, only you can see further between the trees. If there is snow, there is more to do in the area too — we have listed the options for winter and sledging separately.
Sauna in the cold
December is the season when the wood-fired barrel sauna really comes into its own. It may be freezing outside; inside the sauna it is not. For many of our guests that is the moment of the day they work towards: first a walk, then the sauna, then the fire. More about it at wellness & outdoors.
Eating out between the days
Not every day needs someone to cook. There are a few places nearby where we eat ourselves; we have gathered them in eating out in Vilsteren, Ommen and Dalfsen. Do book ahead over Christmas, though — it is as busy here as anywhere.
What you will not find here
We are not a party venue, and we are not one at New Year either. There is room for up to six people, we rent only to families and couples, and after 23:00 it is quiet — including on 31 December. If you are looking for a group celebration, we are the wrong address. If you want to see the year out with your family or as a couple in a silent forest, exactly right.
Practical
Three bedrooms for up to six people, two bathrooms with rainfall showers, and for the smallest ones a cot, two high chairs and a baby bath. Check-in is contactless between 16:00 and 22:00, check-out between 07:00 and 11:00. Everything about the layout is on the page about the bungalow.
