The bungalow is deliberately only for families and couples seeking time for each other. No parties next door, but a private sauna in the garden, a wood stove indoors and forests where on a weekday morning you’ll meet no one. A weekend here is a long weekend — from Friday to Monday inclusive. Here’s what it looks like.
Friday — arrive and have nothing left to do
Check yourself in from 4 p.m. — no one is waiting for you, and that’s exactly the charm. Light the wood stove, or better still: the wood stove under the canopy, and eat your first evening meal outside. Round off the day in the barrel sauna in the garden, with the cool outdoor shower next to it and, above, a starry sky free from the city’s light pollution.
Saturday — estate, Vecht and dining out
In the morning, walk one of the routes across the Vilsteren estate — centuries-old lanes, a tea pavilion and the river Vecht. In the afternoon, hire bikes or bring your own for a ride along the Vecht towards Ommen or Dalfsen. For the evening, book a table at Herberg de Klomp in the village of Vilsteren (Vilsterseweg 10): artisanal French cuisine with regional produce, a few minutes from the bungalow.
Sunday — no alarm, no plan
The bonus of a long weekend: Sunday is completely free. Have breakfast under the canopy, take the sauna in the morning for once instead of the evening, and cycle nowhere at all if you like. Or finally do that one outing that didn’t fit on Saturday.
Monday — slow breakfast, short walk, home
Take one more loop through the forest and check yourself out before 11 a.m. — while the rest of the Netherlands is already at work.
